Welcome to Project Mat Leave, a creation that has been “in the works” since my first maternity leave.
Despite my occupation (I’m an obstetrics nurse) and the loads of advice I received before having my first baby, nothing could have fully prepared me for all the changes that a baby brings. The huge shift in priorities, time management, focus, attention, privacy, finances, responsibilities….need I go on?
I feel like maternity leave truly tested me to the core about who I was and who I could be. I began experimenting and challenging the “status quo” with regards to products I used around the house, types of food we ate, how and where our reduced finances were used, and how I could use this unique time to discover and develop my unique interests and passions!
It all happened quite by accident, actually. I was complaining about how diapers were so ridiculously expensive and wasteful, and another Mama offered to let me borrow a few of her cloth diapers to see if it was something I might be interested in. Well, it was way easier than I thought, and the savings were significant. This opened my eyes to organic materials, organic cleaning products (and how to make my own!), and organic foods. It was like a light turned on in my brain; so many areas in my life could be transformed! The possibilities were endless!
While I believe that every Mama needs to find her own balance between commercial products and homemade ones, I do challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and try out a few recipes or DIY products; you may discover that it’s not as hard as you think, and you may just enjoy yourself along the way! And what’s not to love about saving money, eating healthier, and reducing the harm on the environment?
This blog is just a jumping-off point; I will strive to inspire you, to motivate you, and to encourage you as a Mama! Embrace your creativity and discover your passions! What an amazing example to set for your children when you embrace your unique gifts and talents!
I look forward to getting to know you and supporting you on your creative journey!
Lots of love,
